Guide for Part-Time Students


As a part-time student, the time that you will be free to spend in the library will be limited.
Library staff are here to help you make optimum use of this time, so that you can find all the resources you need.

How do I join?

  • As a registered student, you automatically have access/membership to the library.
  • Your ID card is also used as your library card. Always have your card with you because you will need it to borrow books, obtain reference material and use the photocopiers & printers.
  • Please inform student services about lost cards. You are responsible for all items borrowed with it.
  • Please also familiarise yourself with the Library Regulations.

How do I borrow?

Books are issued to you by staff at the library desk or by using the self-service machine adjacent to the library desk.

All items are subject to recall, this may mean that your borrowing period is shortened.

Borrowing entitlements

A combination of 10 items in total can be borrowed

  • General Collection — 10 items for 1 week with 22 automatic renewals, unless recalled..
  • Short Loan — Up to a maximun of 4 items for 3 days. No renewals.
  • DVD collection- 4 items for 3 days with 3 automatic renewals, unless recalled.
  • Reference collection– library use only.
  • Journals - library use only.
  • Theses - library use only

Overdue loans and suspensions

You will be suspended from library services for each day that an item on loan to you is overdue

  • If you have billed items on your account you may not be able to view your exam results.

How do I find relevant information?

Your TU Dublin - Tallaght Campus network ID and password is required to access library online resources both on and off campus.

These include:

  • Exam papers
  • Your library record
  • Request books
  • Online databases, online journals

and Search Options

The library catalogue allows you to check what books, journals, videos, DVDs, student projects/theses etc. that are physically held in the library, whether they are available and where they are shelved.

From the library catalogue page you can log in to your library record and view what items you have on loan, and how many automatic renewals are left for each loan, view your loan history, submit an inter-library loan, and place requests for items on loan to another user.

SEARCH FIND IT! - simultaneously searches the library catalogue PLUS online databases, online journals, ebooks, articles, and material freely available online. The library recommends that you use this comprehensive discovery search tool.

Search Options - search for materials by subject discipline, search other libraries, Google scholar, Arrow repository.

Ask a librarian

The ask a librarian service is for TU Dublin - Tallaght Campus library users who need answers to relatively uncomplicated questions about the library or research material in print and online related to your courses and projects.

Inter-library loans

Books and articles unavailable in the Institute's library may be ordered from other institutions using the inter-library loan service. Some may be requested online.

Library facilities

Photocopiers and printing

Your ID card acts as your photocopier card. Simply put credit on your ID card using the virtual cash machine (located near the toilets in the main corridor of the college), and swipe or key in your student number.


A number of computers are located in the main area on the mezzanine floor. There is also an open access computer lab on the mezzanine level of the library where you can access Microsoft Office products and the internet.

A small number of notebook laptops are available to borrow from the library desk for library use only.
They can be borrowed for a maximum of 3 hours after which time the borrower will accrue 1 penalty point for every 15 minutes overdue.

Group study rooms

If you need to work together, you can book one of our group study rooms, located on the mezzanine. These can only be booked online through the library website.

Assistive technologies

The library has specialised software and hardware for use by students with disabilities or learning difficulties. Ask any member of staff for more details or see Library users with disabilities

DVD collection

The library has an extensive DVD collection with DVDs covering a range of subjects. 4 DVDs can be borrowed for a 3 day period. A television and DVD player are available in Group Study Room 2.

Time savers

  • You can contact us with queries by telephone or email. Check out the Ask a Librarian service on our web-site.
  • You can review your loans or request books through the library web-site by logging on to your library record.
  • Past exam papers are available online via the library home page
  • Access online databases such as Emerald, General OneFile, Science Direct and much more both on & off-campus.
  • Book a group study room via the library home page.

Points to remember

  • Please make sure your mobile phone is switched off or on silent, as their use disturbs the study of others.
  • If the alarm at the exit door sounds as you leave the library, please return to the library desk.
  • Food and drink is not permitted in the library.
  • All communication & notification from the library to students will be via your email account.
